Whitewater Game Recap

Jr. Varsity vs Whitewater HS on 2/27/2012 6:30:00 PM
Posted Saturday, March 03, 2012 by Ron Fisher
For our first game of the year, the Grady Girls turned in an impressive performance.

We had 22 girls in attendance with 9 girls who had no previous experience participating.

Last year Grady lost 17-4 to Whitewater (Fayetteville), so the girls were very nervous about the game.

Lindsay Van Beck opened the game with a quick score and Grady never looked back.  By half time the score was 4-4 and the girls started gaining confidence.  With approximately 10 minutes left in the second half, Grady pulled ahead 6-4.  Coach Jones substituted most of the new players.  Whitewater then scored 2 goals during the next five minutes.

A timeout was called by Grady and the Middies and Billie Lavine gave the girls their marching orders.  On faceoff, Deya Bowers popped the ball in the air (against  a girl 5 inches taller than her), Lindsay Van Beck caught the ball in mid air and 4 seconds later, Grady was ahead 7-6.  Atiana Johnson then scored the game winning goal.

Whitewater was not done.  With two minutes left, Whitewater scored their 7th goal.  After the face off, Billie Lavine blocked a number of shots and Jasmine Burnett scooped up the ground ball.   She ran to the ball down to the opposite goal and played keep away sealing the win.

Special mention should be made of the stellar play of Billie Lavine, she stopped over 70% of the shot attempts and Whitewater was only 1 of 8 on Free Shots.  The defense of Tenciah Dixon, Khadijah Brown, Ebony Sminth, and Janice Burnett were outstanding.

Afterwards, the girls celebrated at Chick-fil-a, which had heard of the girls win before they arrived.
